The Office for Science and Technology of the Consulate General of France in Atlanta is proud to celebrate Dr. Jaap de Roode and the newly released French edition of his remarkable book Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

Dr Jaap de Roode will take you on a journey across species and continents, revealing how animals - from tiny ants to great apes - diagnose illness, use medicinal plants, and even practice forms of preventive care.
With his signature blend of scientific insight and vivid storytelling, Jaap de Roode shows how animal self-medication is reshaping our understanding of evolution, behavior, and the origins of human medicine. ABOUT JAAP DE ROODE, PhD:

Jaap de Roode studied biology at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and obtained his PhD in evolutionary biology from the University of Edinburgh. He is currently the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, where he studies parasites of monarch butterflies and honey bees. He teaches introductory biology to undergraduate students, and directs the Infectious Diseases Across Scales Training Program, which trains graduate students in the study and control of infectious diseases. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is on the board of directors of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, a non-profit organization that focuses on recreating native habitat for pollinators. He has worked as a freelance science journalist, and recently published his popular science book Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves.
